U-Value Calculations

A comprehensive analysis of your building’s thermal performance

Optimising your building to keep the cold out and the heat in

U-value calculations measure the rate of heat transfer through building elements, such as walls, floors, roofs, and windows.

They are a mandatory requirement for Building Control approval and play a vital role in designing energy-efficient buildings. If they are not estimated correctly, you’re likely to face failed checks and high energy bills, neither of which are desirable at any stage of your project.

Our U-value calculation service provides fast, accurate reports that address issues like thermal bridging and underperforming materials. With tailored advice and up to 3 revisions included in our packages as standard, we provide everything you need to ensure compliance, optimise your results, and avoid costly reworks.

Why do you need this service?

Regulatory
compliance

Lower U-values indicate better insulation and reduced heat loss, making them critical for meeting Part L Building Regulations.

Smarter material
choices

Having these calculations to hand enables informed decisions about insulation and building materials, balancing cost, performance, and sustainability.

Energy
efficiency

U-value calculations are central to reducing heat loss, ensuring lower energy costs, and creating a more comfortable indoor environment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

U-value Calculations
FAQs

All key building elements, including walls, floors, roofs, windows, and doors, require U-value assessments to meet UK Building Regulations.

Typical targets for new UK builds are:

  • Walls: 0.18 W/m²K or lower
  • Roofs: 0.13 W/m²K or lower
  • Floors: 0.15 W/m²K or lower

Thermal bridging accounts for heat loss at junctions or corners. Ignoring it can result in underestimated heat loss and non-compliance with regulations.

BR443 provides standardised conventions for U-value calculations, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and compliance with UK Building Regulations.

What are the key components
of U-value calculations?

Thermal conductivity evaluates how well each material in the element conducts heat energy. Lower conductivity materials, like insulation, will ultimately enhance the building's thermal performance.

The thickness of each material layer will affect its resistance to heat flow, reducing the U-value, so this is something we will assess as part of our checks. We also use thermal bridging to identify the areas where heat is escaping the construction element more rapidly, such as stud work.
