Part E Sound Testing

Verifying the acoustic performance of your building

Aligning the results from professional sound tests with regulatory standards

Sound testing is mandatory for certain new builds and conversions to ensure that noise transfer between walls, floors, and ceilings remains within acceptable limits for occupant comfort and privacy. But the process can be complex, especially when building designs or materials do not automatically meet acoustic performance standards.

Energy Digest will manage these tests for you, providing clear advice and actionable solutions to address noise issues if any arise. Our streamlined approach ensures you will receive the documentation you need to achieve your compliance goals, without any additional stress or unforeseen delays that could impact the success of your project.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Sound Testing FAQs

Buildings often fail Part E sound tests due to:

  • Poorly installed or inadequate insulation materials.
  • Gaps around fixtures, fittings, or penetrations in walls and floors.
  • Weak junctions between building elements, leading to sound leakage.
  • Lack of isolation between materials (eg, no resilient layers under flooring).
  • Incorrect or insufficient sealing of doors, windows, or other openings.

Sound testing ensures that walls and floors effectively reduce noise transfer between rooms and neighbouring properties. This helps:

  • Improve privacy by minimising sound intrusion.
  • Enhance comfort by reducing disruptive noises from adjoining spaces.
  • Create a quieter and more peaceful indoor environment for living or working.

Yes, sound testing can be combined with services like air pressure testing, ventilation testing, and SAP calculations. Coordinating these services streamlines the compliance process, reduces project delays, and ensures all essential assessments are completed efficiently and cost-effectively.

In some cases, robust details (pre-tested designs for walls and floors) can eliminate the need for sound testing. However, this option is only available if the project follows the exact specifications of the robust detail system. For most projects, especially bespoke designs or conversions, sound testing is required to verify compliance with Part E regulations.

Airborne sound testing vs impact sound testing:
what are the differences?

Airborne sound testing measures the amount of sound that passes through walls and floors, such as noise from voices, music, or TVs. It involves generating noise on one side of the partition and measuring how much sound reaches the other side.

Impact sound testing, on the other hand, assesses the noise produced by physical impacts, such as footsteps or furniture movement on a floor. A tapping machine is used to simulate these sounds, and the noise levels are measured below the tested floor.

Both test types are vital for providing an overall indication of how noise travels within your environment, and which measures need to be put in place to eliminate excess sound.
