Spoke with Josh who not only reassured me but asked for a fee that I thought was fair. Thank you Josh. Use again? Definitely.
The team really know their stuff – super helpful and always had clear answers to any questions or compliance issues we ran into. Definitely our go-to for any future projects!
Quick and well priced water calculation service and received an appliance specification report alongside the certificate which was really useful for us and the building control officer, highly recommended!
Very knowledgeable about building regulations, and the industry. Always goes the extra mile to help out! 5*
An SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model) calculation evaluates the energy use and CO₂ emissions of non-domestic buildings, covering factors like heating, lighting, ventilation, insulation, and renewables. It’s necessary to ensure compliance with Part L of UK Building Regulations. It is produced by comparing a building’s efficiency against a baseline (known as the ‘Notional Building’).
You typically need them during the design stage in order to assess proposals against regulatory efficiency benchmarks, and at the as-built stage to confirm the building meets current energy efficiency standards. SBEM calculations can be arranged by developers, architects, planning consultants, contractors or building owners – pretty much anyone who needs to ensure compliance before letting, selling or occupying the property.
We will ask you for full architectural plans with construction details; insulation specs and glazing types; a breakdown of your heating, ventilation, cooling, and lighting systems; and information on any renewable energy installations at the property.
Timelines will always vary depending on project size and complexity, but many assessors work to a standard timeframe of 7–10 working days. However, at Energy Digest, we can often turn your SBEM calculations around in as little as 24 hours.
Don’t panic – revisions are included in your fee. We can provide advice on improving insulation levels, optimising HVAC systems, and perhaps even adding onsite renewables like solar PV to improve the property’s overall energy performance rating. Once adjustments have been made, we will submit the revised model for compliance, and we will repeat this stage of the process until all parties are satisfied with the result.
Absolutely. By modelling different building and system options, SBEM helps shape decisions around envelope specification, HVAC design, and renewable integration, because these calculations enable everyone involved in the build to optimise its energy performance early on.
Yes. After the as-built SBEM assessment, we will send you a non-domestic EPC, which reflects the building’s official energy rating and compliance status.
