Frensham Manor Equestrian Centre recently expanded its facilities to include a state-of-the-art indoor riding school and competition arena. As part of this development, a dual-occupancy flat was introduced to provide on-site accommodation, ensuring convenience for equestrian professionals and event participants.
Energy Digest was engaged to undertake SBEM Calculations, SAP Calculations, and Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM), alongside PSI Value calculations. Our role was to optimise the new facilities for energy efficiency, regulatory compliance, and carbon footprint reduction while maintaining superior indoor environmental quality.
A carefully structured energy strategy was implemented to balance performance, comfort, and sustainability:
Riding School Climate Control
The services design was optimised based on predicted occupancy and environmental exposure. Areas with high heat demand used radiant heating, while spaces requiring cooling were equipped with high-efficiency split systems to enhance comfort.
Thermal Bridging Optimisation
The residential area required a detailed PSI Value analysis due to updates in Approved Document L Volume 1 (2022). We ensured accurate thermal bridging calculations, matching the construction makeup to minimise heat loss and improve energy efficiency.
Enhanced Building Fabric Performance
Both the commercial and residential spaces were designed to exceed U-value requirements. Large glazing areas were incorporated for natural daylighting, with compensatory measures implemented to reduce heating and cooling loads.
Designing mixed-use projects that blend commercial and residential spaces typically requires adhering to separate regulatory standards. In most cases, this means selecting different products for each area. However, we identified an opportunity to standardize key components across both building types, enabling unified procurement. By leveraging bulk purchasing, we secured cost savings while fully meeting all compliance requirements.
Through detailed energy modelling and strategic system design, Energy Digest successfully delivered:
