Josh at Energy Digest was superb.

He took the time to talk through the requirements of the project (larger than 'permitted' areas of glazing) listening to what we wanted and then offering useful advice. He explored different options with us and was able to specify cost effective materials that ensured the SAP rating of our design exceeded the requirements current building regulations.

Thanks Josh!

What Do Part O Overheating Calculations Assess?

Overheating calculations assess whether a dwelling's internal temperature is likely to rise to a level that creates uncomfortable, or even harmful, living conditions for its occupants.

This is calculated by reviewing factors including the dwelling's thermal mass, glazing specification, window opening areas and orientation, external shading, and the ventilation strategy.

Simplified Method

A spreadsheet-based assessment using fixed glazing and ventilation criteria. It's a quicker, lower-cost route to compliance, suited to straightforward dwelling designs.

Dynamic Simulation Modelling

A detailed thermal simulation that models how a dwelling performs under realistic weather conditions and occupancy patterns. It's required for more complex designs and gives a more accurate result.

Part O overheating calculations typically cost between £180 and £600, depending on the size, complexity and design of the project. Upload your drawings to receive a quotation within 15 minutes during business hours.

Floor plans, elevations, sections, a site plan and a full building specification are required. This includes a window schedule, opening angles, ventilation strategy, and any shading provisions.

It’s common for an overheating assessment to fail initially, usually due to insufficient ventilation or a lack of shading. Drawing on years of research, we provide economical and practical solutions to help achieve compliance without unnecessary redesign.

Most Part O overheating calculations are completed within 7 working days of receiving the required drawings and specification information.

Not always. We provide both the Simplified Method and Dynamic Thermal Modelling, but most projects on this service are assessed using Dynamic Thermal Modelling, which gives a more accurate picture of overheating risk for complex layouts, dense developments or units with limited cross-ventilation.

Part O of the Building Regulations requires the following building to prove compliance:

  • New Build Dwellings
  • Institutions (where people sleep on the premises like care homes)
  • Student Accommodation or other hall of residences

All Part O overheating calculations are completed by accredited assessors using approved Dynamic Thermal Modelling software and are suitable for Building Control submission.

Yes. Overheating calculations can be updated to reflect changes to the dwelling design, specification, ventilation strategy or shading provisions.

Overheating calculations should be completed at concept design stage, before construction begins, to demonstrate compliance with Part O of the Building Regulations and identify any changes required before work starts on site.

No. A Part O overheating assessment is not required when converting a building into one or more residential dwellings. But you may need a TM59 Assessment instead.
